Key aspects of the JCH experience

Friendship

Friendship Janet Clarke Hall prides itself on being a relaxed environment in which people will make lifelong friends while achieving success in their studies. As one of the smallest of Melbourne's university colleges, Janet Clarke Hall offers the chance to know others, and to be known by them, within a rich and diverse community.

Scholarship

Scholarship Janet Clarke Hall has a proud academic tradition. The College counts, among its alumni, Chancellors and Vice-Chancellors, Rhodes Scholars, Fulbright and Monash Scholars, and writers, businesspeople, and professionals in all walks of life. Students have opportunity, in the course of the year, to meet world-famous scholars such as our College Visitor, Nobel Laureate Professor Peter Doherty AC, along with other highly distinguished professionals from all walks of life.

Through its tutorial programme, academic mentoring, guest speakers, occasional lectures and seminars, the College helps students in their formation as students and future leaders. The size of the College, and high ratio of tutors to students, encourages strong personal attention and awareness of each student and their academic development in the course of their university studies.

Leadership

Leadership Beyond friendship, and opportunities for sporting, cultural and social life equal to any, the College offers a place to explore and widen one's horizons, both personally and professionally, in a way that may be truly life-changing. College functions bring students together with outstanding leaders from all walks and stages of life - but, just as importantly, there is ample opportunity for leadership within the student body through the various committees of our Student Club. Students at Janet Clarke Hall are encouraged to lead, working closely with the College staff for the common good, and supported in their formation as scholars and leaders of the future.

Heritage

Heritage Janet Clarke Hall contains a single and magnificent heritage-listed building set within an attractive, cloistered courtyard garden. The gentle ambience created by its architecture, and a range of facilities on par with any college within the University on a per capita basis, make it a unique and rewarding place to live and study. Within Janet Clarke Hall you will find up-to-date computing and IT facilities including a College Intranet, an ever expanding and relevant library, facilities for tennis, netball, table tennis, billiards, a magnificent dining hall, and three well appointed common rooms for social and formal use. Staff and students at JCH are committed to developing environmentally-friendly policies and practices across the College and to 'think and act green' wherever possible.
