Administrative staff

principal The Principal is responsible for the day-to-day leadership of the College in all its aspects

Dr Damian Powell graduated with First Class Honours in history and archaeology from the University of Melbourne, winning the Margaret Kiddle Prize for history, the William Cullican Prize for archaeology, and the Dwight Prize for combined honours, and working on the University's Tell Ahmar Archaeological Expedition in Syria . His doctorate was awarded the E.W. Benham Prize by the University of Adelaide . During his academic career Dr Powell has lived and worked in six university colleges in Australia , also lecturing in New Zealand at the University of Canterbury . Dr Powell is a Director on the Board of Ballarat and Queen's Anglican Grammar School, and Secretary of AHUACHI (the national association of Heads of Colleges and Halls in Australia). A Senior Fellow in the Department of History, he speaks and publishes regularly on aspects of Australian and British legal and military history.


Vice Principal The Vice-Principal is deputy to the Principal, and responsible to the Principal for the day-to-day leadership of the College in his absence. She is responsible for the academic and pastoral well being of students, working closely with members of the Senior Common Room to provide support to the student body.

Mrs Donna Davies holds Bachelors and Masters degrees in Science from RMIT University, and has held a range of senior positions in the secondary school sector, including as Senior School curriculum coordinator at Methodist Ladies' College, Kew. Mrs Davies has lectured at RMIT and Monash Universities, and has residential experience in boarding schools, including at the Millfield School, the largest co-educational boarding school in the United Kingdom. Mrs Davies has published an award-winning secondary school text book and is employed as a consultant by the International Baccalaureate Organisation, Cardiff, to write curriculum and examination materials.


Bursar The Bursar is responsible to the Principal for the financial well being of College, and works closely with Council and Principal to regulate financial policies.

Mr Graeme Latham commenced employment in the higher education sector in 1981 as Business Manager at the Melbourne College of Advanced Education (subsequently amalgamated with The University of Melbourne). He then worked for ten years at residential colleges at The University of Melbourne before taking up the position of Director of Finance at the University of the South Pacific. He returned to Australia in July 2006 when he took up the position of Bursar at JCH.





Librarian The Librarian is responsible for the management and upkeep of the College library and archive, as well as administration of the computer network and web-site.

Mr Nicholas Purcell completed a Bachelor of Business Systems degree at Monash University after transferring from a Bachelor of Arts degree with a double major in History and International Relations. Nicholas has worked in the IT industry for a number of years, first as a project manager, and as outsourcing manager for AXA Australia before coming to JCH.






Facilities Manager The Facilities Manager is responsible for the efficient operation of the College buildings and grounds as a prestigious student accommodation community. The role includes management of the daily in-house and contractor-provided services as well as the supervision of building and renovation projects.

Mr Bruce Stewart began his career in food service and hospitality management which progressed into multi-service delivery and project management. Bruce has held senior positions with major service providers including SHRM, Compass Group, Tempo and Eastern Healthcare Network. Most recent assignments include management of projects for Fortesque Metals Group in the Pilbara, Australian Defence Force in East Timor and United Nations in Afghanistan.



RecordsManager The Records Manager is responsible for the management and upkeep of the past student database.

Mrs Penny Lewisohn holds degrees from Melbourne and Monash Universities; she is a former student of the College and has been a member of the JCH Council. Penny has held positions on boards in the public sector, and has engaged in a range of paid and voluntary activities in the health, agricultural and insurance sectors. Her role in maintaining JCH past student records will make it easier for former students to stay connected with one another and with the College. Penny is at JCH on Mondays. Bookkeeper The Bookkeeper is responsible for the College payroll, and daily financial transactions and accounting.

Ms Mari Nicholls holds a diploma in Accounting from the South Australian Institute of Technology and has extensive experience in accounting and bookkeeping. Mari worked in various accountancy practices and in private practice before coming to JCH.










Principal's Secretary The Office Manager is responsible for the day-to-day running of the office, acts as the Principal's PA, the admissions secretary and handles all conference enquiries.

Ms Sabrina Ranieri has lived in Melbourne most of her life. She has worked for a variety of organisations in areas such as avionics, the tyre industry, and telecommunications. Sabrina has served educational institutions in accounting and administrational roles.





Residential tutors

classics Ms Claire Baxter
B.A. (Hons) Melbourne
Teaching areas: Classics

During her undergraduate years as an arts student, Claire Baxter was a cyclist on the Australian National Mountain Bike Team and represented the University of Melbourne as a road cyclist at the Australian University Games. She was Melbourne University Female Athlete of the Year in 2003 and 2004 and Melbourne University Athlete of the Year in 2004. She then left Australia to ride with the professional women's road cycling team, Team Saccarreli, in Italy, where she learnt to speak Italian. In 2006 Claire represented Australia at the Commonwealth Games in Mountain Biking, before departing for Belgium to ride for Lotto-Belisol.

Claire returned to Australia in 2007 to complete her honours degree in Classics and Archaeology. This year she is studying a Science degree where she hopes to major in behavioural neuroscience or psychology. Claire is a member of the Melbourne University athletics club.


Languages Ms Zoe Dauth
B.A. (Hons) Melbourne
Teaching areas: Linguistics, Spanish


Zoe Dauth was born in Queensland, but has since lived in Victoria, Indonesia, the Philippines, Hong Kong and Chile. After completing the International Baccalaureate Diploma in Hong Kong, she studied a Bachelor of Arts (Honours), majoring in Spanish and Linguistics at the University of Melbourne. Zoe was a resident at Janet Clarke Hall for two years, where she was editor of the college magazine, organised guest speakers and ran photography club activities.

As a University of Melbourne Student Ambassador, she founded Co-operation 21, an organisation aimed at integrating Spanish language students with the Spanish-speaking community, which was launched at Janet Clarke Hall. She was awarded a scholarship to study Galician in Spain, was a recipient of the Lorna Stirling Travelling Fund and was one of three student delegates chosen to attend the Universitas 21 Undergraduate Research Conference in Singapore. She studied for a year in Chile on exchange where she also taught English, volunteered in an orphanage in Peru, assisted on environmental conservation projects in the Amazon Jungle and the Coastal Rain forest in Ecuador and organised Co-operation 21 functions in conjunction with Australian Education International.

Zoe has worked in public relations, marketing, events management and the entertainment industry in the Philippines, Hong Kong and Australia. She is now fulfilling her passion for promoting student engagement in her new role as Assistant for Student Leadership Programs in the L.I.V.E. Unit at the University of Melbourne. She enjoys traveling, photography, gardening and Latin dancing.


Music Dr Anna Goldsworthy
B. Mus. (Hons) Adelaide, M.Mus. TCU, D.Mus Arts, Melbourne

Born in Adelaide, Anna Goldsworthy has been living in Melbourne since 1999, and completed the degree Doctor of Musical Arts at the Faculty of Music, University of Melbourne in 2003. Previous studies have been at the National Academy of Music in Melbourne, Texas Christian University, and the Elder Conservatorium in Adelaide. Her main teachers have been Eleonora Sivan and Ronald Farren-Price. Anna has also studied piano in Russia with Lev Naumov, with the help of an Arts SA Emerging Artist Award, and has studied chamber music in Hanover with Hatto Beyerle. Prizes include the 2000 David Paul Landa Memorial Scholarship for piano and (as part of the Seraphim Trio) the Leading Piano Trio and Audience Choice awards in the 2001 Australian National Chamber Music Competition.

Anna has given numerous recitals in Australia and internationally, as a soloist and chamber musician. Her 2004 world tour included recitals at the Prince Yong theatre in Beijing, at the Festival Musicale delle Nazioni in Rome, and at the Buenos Aires International Music Festival. In 2005, she undertook an Australia Council residency at the Cite Internationale des Arts in Paris. Anna's writing has appeared in publications such as The Monthly, The Australian Book Review, Best Australian Essays 2007 and Best Australian Essays 2008. Her solo piano CD 'Come With Us' was released by ABC-Classics in January 2008. Her play, Maestro, co-written with Peter Goldsworthy, is being produced by the State Theatre Company of South Australia in March 2009, while her musical memoir, Piano Lessons is scheduled for publication by Black Inc in September 2009.

Anna lives at Janet Clarke Hall with her partner Nicholas, baby Reuben and dog Rupert.


Hugh Mr Hugh Gundlach
B. Com. (Hons) Melbourne, DipML (French), Melbourne
Teaching areas: Commerce, Creative Writing


Born in Baltimore, MD, Hugh Gundlach has been at the University of Melbourne since 2003, having completed a Bachelor of Commerce majoring in Accounting and Marketing, Honours in Management and Marketing, and a Diploma of Modern Languages (French). Hugh tutors a variety of subjects for the Department of Management and Marketing at the University, having begun in 2006 while still completing his Bachelor degree. In 2008 Hugh was the recipient of the Kinsman Scholarship, a prize awarded to Honours theses most likely to be publishable in a journal. Hugh's thesis, written and researched during his time at Janet Clarke Hall in 2007, focused on the concept of authenticity in the premium beer market. With one year remaining in his Bachelor of Arts, where he majors in Cultural Studies and English Literature, Hugh has taken leave to accept a scholarship from RMIT's Graduate School of Business to study the MBA. Outside of study, Hugh enjoys writing, and has been published in The Age, Farrago and Vibewire. He is also a keen distance runner and road cyclist, and has represented the University in both sports.


Science Mr Joshua Koh
B. Sc. (Hon) Malaysia, M.Sc. Flinders
Teaching areas: Science


Joshua Koh graduated from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia in 2003 with a Bachelor of Science degree with Honours in Biology before completing his Master of Biotechnology Studies degree from the Flinders University of South Australia. Joshua received numerous summer research scholarships at Flinders University to develop bio-analytical assays such as western blot and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for use in cancer and neuroscience research. He was also awarded the Biotechnology Postgraduate Scholarship and received a Chancellor's Letter of Commendation from Flinders University.

Joshua is currently pursuing his PhD studies at the School of Botany, University of Melbourne, focusing on the control of wild radish (a major weed species) reproduction through the use of novel molecular and genetic engineering approaches. Joshua is a recipient of the Melbourne University Science Faculty Scholarship (SFS) and Weeds CRC PhD Studentship Award.


Wade Mr Wade Mosse
B.E. (Hons) Melbourne, B.Sc. Melbourne
Teaching areas: Chemistry and Chemical Engineering


Wade Mosse grew up in country Victoria, and came to the University of Melbourne in 2000 to study Chemical Engineering and Microbiology. During his undergraduate career he was included on the Dean's Honours List in Engineering, won the Exhibition Prize and ASM Prize in Microbiology, and was awarded the McGraw-Hill Prize in Chemical Engineering. A recipient of an Australian Postgraduate Award, Wade is currently finishing a PhD in the areas of surface chemistry and bionano-engineering, and has been an author of three peer-reviewed publications.

Outside of academic life, Wade rows with Mercantile Rowing Club, and has been a member of Woolamai Beach Surf Life Saving Club for over ten years.


History Ms Julia Ulyannikova
Dip Hist SSU Sakhalin, M.A. CEU
Teaching areas: History


Ms Julia Ulyannikova was born and raised in Russia. She holds a Diploma from the Sakhalin State University (Russia), an Master of Arts in Central European History from the Central European University (Budapest, Hungary) and is currently completing her PhD thesis in History at the University of Melbourne. Her current research project has originated as a search for identity of a former convict colony of Sakhalin Island, where she has been living and studying. With time this project expanded to include a study of the Russian penal policy of the nineteenth century and of the Russian imperial governance in general. Julia has been tutoring in various courses in Russian History at the University of Melbourne for the last four years. Her broader academic interests include intellectual history, intercultural communication and modern art.


hairuoMs Hairuo Ye
B.Ec.Renmin, MAppCom(Acc) Melbourne
Teaching areas: Commerce


Born and raised in Beijing, Hairuo graduated from Renmin University of China with a Bachelor of Economics in Finance. During her undergraduate years she was an active organizer in the students' committee and was the winner of the Scholarship for Eminent Student Leader. She has also assisted her professor in several published works. She moved into Janet Clarke Hall in February 2008 as a postgraduate student in Accounting and, after giving tutorials in commerce subjects for one semester, applied to become a residential tutor in the second semester. She has recently completed her Master's degree in the University of Melbourne in December 2008, and will commence her CPA Program in Semester 1, 2009.

Hairuo has a wide range of interests beyond her commerce studies. She is a productive writer and has won many prizes in writing back in China. She has read intensively in classical literature, and is particularly fond of history reading. She is an advanced amateur pianist, and is planning to take a part time course of Diploma in Music in the near future. Meanwhile she is also an enthusiastic traveler and has traveled a lot both in China and in Australia.
